Would you like to start running but don't know how to begin? Then this article is for you!

The Cool Running’s “Couch to 5k” program is a popular running program designed to take your everyday non-athlete and have them running a 5k (about 3 miles) in only 2 months.

Running is a great way to start a healthy lifestyle. It burns calories, builds muscle, and clears your mind. Running isn’t the end-all, be-all mode of exercise. Optimally you would eventually have a weight training and cardio component to your fitness regime. However, let’s stick to running for today.

Running is free. Running is intuitive and needs minimal coaching to get started. Just make sure you have a decent pair of shoes!

Most people fail at running because they start off having no idea what they’re doing. They run too hard, get too sore, and quit. This program is good because it starts you off SLOW, which is exactly what you need if you’re a couch potato.

Another great element of this program is that it is not a big time commitment. You only exercise for 20-30 minutes at a time and just 3 days per week.  This makes this program ideal for those with busy schedules.

The easiest part about the Couch to 5k program is that there are now smart phone apps featured around this program. I have used the phone apps on my clients with great success. For example, the “Run Double” Couch to 5k app on the Android system will tell you when to run and walk and even has a GPS tracking feature. So there you have it. Plug in times for 3 days each week for the next 2 months on your calendar to set aside 30 minutes for the Couch to 5k program. Download an app on your smart phone and now you have a plan and the times set aside in your schedule. Now all you have to do is follow the program!
